Is Spinal Manipulation Beneficial for Acute Low Back Pain?

The Journal of the American Medical Association also known as JAMA is one of the most prestigious medical publications in the world. It publishes research on a variety of medical topics and their most recent publication dated 4/11/17 published a study on spinal manipulation. The study looked at spinal manipulative therapy (SMT), also called spinal adjusting and this treatments' effects on acute low back pain. Acute low back pain is defined as low back pain of 6 weeks or less in duration. The study was a Meta-analysis and a systematic review of 26 randomized clinical trials evaluating the  treatment of  acute low back pain with spinal manipulative therapy (SMT).  The authors of the study were Neil M. Paige MD, MSHS, Isomi M. Miake-Lye, BA and Marika Suttorp Booth MS et al.

The study concluded that patients with acute low back pain had modest improvements in both pain and function from spinal manipulative therapy. Some patients had minor transient increase in pain, muscle stiffness and headaches. There were no serious adverse events in the studies associated with the spinal manipulation.
