What is Med Pay Automobile Accident Insurance?

What is Med Pay Automobile Accident Insurance?

Med Pay insurance is a type of automobile insurance that pays for automobile collision injuries no matter who is as fault. Your own Med Pay pays for your automobile accident related injuries even if someone else is at fault. This may seem wrong to have your own insurance cover your automobile accident injuries when someone else is clearly responsible for your injuries but if you purchased Med Pay you should take advantage of this coverage. One good thing about Med Pay insurance is that if you are not the at fault driver in an automobile accident, your rates can not be increased by your insurance company because you used your Med Pay benefits to pay for injuries caused by an automobile collision.

Med Pay insurance is necessary because Colorado has a tort legal system for automobile related collisions. This means that the at fault driver's insurance company is reluctant and often refuses to pay for your injuries, even when they know their policyholder is at fault. If they pay for your automobile accident injuries, they are admitting fault and they don't want to admit fault in case you don't recover completely from your car accident injuries and sue their policyholder for your permanent injuries. In fact, many times automobile insurance companies don't pay the medical bills of someone their policyholder injured for many months to even years after the automobile accident. People injured in automobile accidents often are sent to collection by hospitals and clinics because the automobile insurance company will not pay for the medical treatment. In most cases, if you are injured in an automobile accident and someone else is at fault, the only way you get your medical bills paid, if you don't have your own Med Pay insurance, is by filing a lawsuit.

Med Pay insurance is also very important if you ever provide rides for friends. If you are the one that caused the automobile accident and your friend is injured,  your Med Pay insurance covers their automobile accident injuries. If you fail to purchase Med Pay and they are injured in your automobile, they may have no insurance coverage to pay for their injuries. Friends can can suddenly become enemies when they have large automobile accident related medical and chiropractic bills that are due to your mistake. They may feel forced to sue you to pay for their injuries and to recover damages if they have permanent injuries.

The minimum Med Pay insurance coverage can be as little as $5000 in Colorado. Colorado automobile insurance law allows you the ability to opt out of this coverage but that is usually a very bad idea. In many cases, the minimum Med Pay coverage is not enough to cover the costs of treating automobile injuries such  as whiplash or cervical strain/sprains. An ambulance ride and an emergency room visit can use up most if not all of the minimum Med Pay benefits. Minimum coverage often doesn't leave any coverage for chiropractic treatments and rehabilitative care. Increasing your Med Pay insurance to limits above the minimum is usually a good idea and very inexpensive.
